Be In The Know!

Did you know that folk will take your hard earned cash and not given you what you requested? Yes ma’am they surely will. If you want Sisterlocks do your research. Out the gate you should confirm that the person who you’re consulting with has taken the Sisterlocks training. Visit the Sisterlocks website @ http://www.sisterlocks.com to see if the stylist is there. If she’s not there that could mean that she has requested to be removed for various reasons i.e., full book of clients or she decided to not renew her Certification. Ask her why she’s not there. In addition to finding out her status request to see her work. Request to speak with her clients. My clients are my walking billboards, if you see a lovely head of Sisterlocks ask the person who their consultant is. Word of mouth still travels pretty fast contrary to popular belief.

To recap…Remember to do your research!

Pictured…Someone who paid close to $1500 for something other than Sisterlocks. She has braids she actually thought she had Sisterlocks. Did you know that folk will take your hard earned cash and not give you what you asked for? Yes indeed they do it every day. Be In The Know!

To be continued…

Shampoo Day…

I shampoo my mature Sisterlocks every other Monday. With the weather warming up this routine may change to once a week. Depending on your activity level, your hair type and what season of life you’re in your shampoo regimen may vary. Another important factor to consider when shampooing is what stage are your locks in, are they newly established, somewhere in the middle or totally settled in? Your consultant is your best person to ask if you’re not sure. There are many shampoos on the market, be sure to check with your consultant for her recommendation for your locks. Happy Monday!

Tuesday’s Hair Tip…

Get rid of hair jewelry that can potentially weaken, break or thin your Locs. Any jewelry with sharp edges or sharp points should be replaced with Loc friendly jewelry. As a wearer of the Lilla Rose hair jewelry for over fifteen years I’ve found the hair jewelry to be comfortable, easy to place and loc friendly. Be kind to your locs, handle and accessorize them with care.

Be Wise In 2018 “Treat” your Sisterlocks with care don’t be “tricked” into thinking that…

Now that you have Sisterlocks you’re footloose and fancy free, no more maintenance for your hair..

>Wrong! Sisterlocks is indeed “low maintenance” but far from “no maintenance.” You must follow your Consultants instructions on maintaining your Sisterlocks between appointments.

You can tame your frizzy Sisterlocks with gel…

>Wrong, gel weighs your locks down and causes build up on and in your locks. The frizz can be tamed by braiding, rolling or two strand twisting your locks. Styling your locks smooths out the frizz and makes it less noticeable. Spritz your locks with a little water and roll or braid your hair, allow your hair to dry thoroughly and enjoy your frizz free style for days. In some hair types the frizz will diminish as the locks mature, in other hair types it is what it is. Locks don’t change the makeup of your hair they just provide an environment for your hair to do what it wants to do naturally which is to coil, curl and form locks.

You can watch a You-Tube and learn how to re-tighten your locks with any of these items…a latch hook, bobby pin, paper clip or a safety pin…

>Wrong, in order to learn to re-tighen your Sisterlocks properly you must be taught by a Master Trainer or a Certified Sisterlocks Consultant with an R Certification. They’re authorized by the home office to teach the class, learning the Sisterlocks way is the best way.

You can use any type of shampoo you want…

>Wrong, in the beginning it’s important that you use a shampoo that will not work against your locks settling in. Under normal circumstances a clarifying shampoo is advised, clarifying shampoos roughen up the hair’s cuticle and removes oils from the hair, this is the best environment for the locks to go through the settling in phase. In some cases clarifying shampoos are to harsh on the scalp, instead of a clarifying shampoo another type of shampoo will be advised by your consultant. Sisterlocks offers a line of products that have been specifically  formulated to clean your locks and not weigh them down.

You should just trim those loose hairs outside of your newly established locks…

>Wrong, while your locks are settling in resist the temptation to do any trimming, those loose hairs often find there way into the locks over time. Trimming them before time compromises the integrity of your  locks, this causes your locks to not be as strong in later years.  Allow your consultant to give you your first grooming at the proper time.

You can grease your scalp and your locks when your scalp is dry and your locks feel “crispy”…

>Wrong, grease will build up on your scalp as well as in your locks. Once your locks have gone through the settling in period you can use the Sisterlocks Moisture treatment or the Sisterlocks Reconstructor to condition your locks. These products have been specifically designed to rinse out of your locks and not cause build up like some conditioners. The Sisterlocks line is just that, a line of products that works well with most Sisterlocks, it has been my product line of choice for the past decade plus. For others, you may have found alternative products and your locks are doing great, if that’s the case wonderful, carry on. Some key questions to ask yourself after your hair has been shampooed, conditioned and dried…Does my hair feel light and airy? Is it limp and lifeless? Can i see and feel  build up in my hair? If your hair doesn’t feel light and airy and there’s noticeable buildup in your locks then it’s time to change your product line.  Keep in mind that we nourish our hair from the inside out, make sure you drink enough water, eat a balanced diet and get plenty of rest and exercise.

Be wise and treat your Sisterlocks with care …Don’t be tricked!

Enjoy the journey!

No looking back…

Forgetting those things of the past, i.e. combs, brushes, picks, flat irons, grease, perms, weaves, extensions, Jeri Curls, Brazilian Blowouts…You get the picture.

When we answer the call to come home to Sisterlocks the aforementioned things become things of the past. We box up the products under the bathroom sink and sing songs of praise that our bank accounts will reflect the extra cash from not having to purchase every new product that comes along.

Wearers of Sisterlocks have embraced not only a hairstyle but a lifestyle which enables you to have more hours in your day. There’s nothing quite as wonderful as not worrying about what to do with your hair. Wearing my hair in this style has liberated my life in so many ways. My only regrets is that I didn’t get my locks earlier. When I met Dr. Cornwell, the originator of Sisterlocks I absolutely loved her beautiful locks, I couldn’t wait to get my locks. After my consultation I got cold feet and wasn’t as ready as I thought. I wasn’t ready for the permanence of the style. I made up my mind about two years later after attending a book signing with Dr. Cornwell. At the book signing I was surrounded by beautiful locks in all shapes, sizes, lengths, and colors, there were gray locks, sun kissed locks, you name it they were there in all their glory. That was all I needed, I made my appointment and was locked within two months.

If you’re on the fence about getting Sisterlocks keep doing your research. Make sure you visit the Sisterlocks website. There you’ll find tons of information, a beautiful locks gallery as well as a list of Certified Consultants/Trainees. When you decide to come home you want to make sure the person is qualified to assist you on your journey. Come home to Sisterlocks and forget about what was under your sink. Visit http://www.sisterlocks.com for more information.

Sisterlocks TM and Head Lice

Can black people get head lice? Myth or Fact? It’s a fact that blacks can get head lice. It’s definitely more difficult for blacks to get head lice because of their curl pattern. The coil in the curl pattern makes it more difficult for lice to travel to the scalp where they thrive. Any nationality is subject to getting head lice.
Wearers of Sisterlocks have a very unique problem when it comes to head lice. One of the main ways head lice are removed is by combing the hair with a fine toothed comb after the hair has been treated with a special over the counter shampoo or a prescription shampoo. Yikes!! We can’t comb our locks, henceforth our fingers become our combs, each lock must be individually inspected and wherever there’s head lice, nits or nymphs they must be removed by hand. This is a tedious and time-consuming task but it must be done in order to rid the locks of the head lice in its many forms. Mainly, it’s our little peeps with Sisterlocks that get head lice but big peeps aren’t immune either for many of them have little peeps that they get them from.

Please check out the information below to further understand head lice and how to treat them. I’ve had clients whose kids have had head lice, it was not the end of their Sisterlocks journey. Reassure your child that everything is going to be just fine, make sure they understand that it’s not their locks that caused them to get head lice, nor is it anything wrong with them. I suggest you use it as a teaching opportunity, knowledge is power. Please see below for more information.
~Three Forms of Lice

exist: nits, nymphs, and mature adults. Nits are lice eggs that attach to the hair shaft and usually hatch within a week. The microscopic eggs are easy to mistake for dandruff or residue from hair styling products.
Once the eggs hatch, lice are known as nymphs, an immature form of the parasite that is gray-ish tan in color. After nine to 12 days, the nymphs mature into adults. The average size of an adult louse is still tiny, at 2 to 3 mm or about the size of a sesame seed.
~Where Do Head Lice Live?

Head lice feed on blood and therefore stay close to the scalp where there is an abundant supply of food. After the nits hatch, they move from the hair shafts to your scalp to find sustenance.
You’ll find nymph and adult lice most commonly on the scalp around the back of your neck and ears. They might also live in your eyebrows or on your eyelashes. When fed, head lice can live for up to a month, but they will die within a day or two if they are not able to feed on blood.
~Creepy Crawlers

:  Head lice are insects, but they can’t fly. Instead, they crawl around in your hair and on your scalp to get nourishment. Lice are spread through close personal contact. The parasites crawl onto your clothing, hairbrushes, hats, towels and any other personal belongings.
If a friend or family member shares your comb or scarf, the head lice can crawl onto the new host and lay eggs, spreading the infestation. Female head lice can lay several eggs each day. Household pets and other animals do not spread head lice to humans.

~Symptoms of Head Lice:   Some people experience the uncomfortable symptoms of head lice before noticing them in the hair, while others are asymptomatic. Head lice bite you in order to feed off your blood. The parasites’ saliva is irritating to many people, causing itching of the scalp. You might develop sores or red, raised bumps on your scalp from scratching your head without realizing why you are itchy at first.
Other symptoms that alert you to a case of head lice include a ticklish feeling on your head, especially at night. The head louse is a nocturnal creature and is more active in the dark than during the light of day.

~Detecting Head Lice: A visual inspection of your hair and scalp is mostly effective in detecting head lice, though the creatures are so small that they can be difficult to spot with the naked eye.
Parting your hair in small sections and literally going through each section with a fine-tooth comb is a painstaking but necessary step in order to find and remove head lice. A bright light and a magnifying glass are useful tools to aid in the detection and diagnostic process.
~Treatment

: Head lice are treated through manual removal with a comb as well as special shampoos containing chemicals that kill lice. Even if just one nit or adult louse is found, treatment is advised to reduce the threat of a full infestation.
Clothing, bedding, and towels must all be washed in hot water to control the infestation. Vacuuming carpets and furniture upholstery is another component of the treatment process for head lice.

~Outlook and Prevention

The good news is while a head lice infestation can be annoying and possibly uncomfortable, this common condition is treatable. Complications are rare and generally limited to skin infections caused by scratching.
Prevent head lice by instituting a “no sharing” rule for personal belongings such as combs, hairbrushes, towels, hats, and bedding.

Steps to Re-tightening Your Sisterlocks

So you think you’re ready to re-tighten your own Sisterlocks…Are you?

There are some really important steps that must not be overlooked in learning to re-tighten your Sisterlocks, they are as follows…

1. You must have Sisterlocks. This means that your locks were put in by someone who was trained, an authorized person, i.e. Sisterlocks Trainee, Certified Sisterlocks Consultant or a Trainer.

2. You must know your locking pattern, simply ask your Consultant for this information. You will only be taught how to re-tighten your locks using your locking pattern. You will not be taught how to start locks, repair locks are groom your locks.

3. Your Sisterlocks must be completely beyond the settling-in phase. The settling-in phase is a phase that all Sisterlocks go through. During the settling in phase your Sisterlocks are doing just that, settling into the Sisterlocks style, they’re becoming more stable as time goes by. When you first get your Sisterlocks you’re given special instructions on caring for your locks. Keeping your regular appointments and following your Consultant’s instruction on caring for your locks between visits will facilitate the settling in process. It’s recommended that you have your locks for at least six months before considering taking the class. Your Sisterlocks Consultant is your best judge as to if you’re a candidate for the class.

4. Seek out a Certified Sisterlocks Consultant with an R Certification. This means that the Consultant has been authorized by the Sisterlocks home office to offer the Sisterlocks re-tightening class.

5. You will be required to sign an agreement that you’re learning the technique in order to maintain your own hair, and that you’re not authorized to do Sisterlocks on anyone’s  hair but your own.

6. Be prepared to pay the price for learning the class. The prices may vary, they can range from $250.00 and up.

For the past 15 years as a Certified Sistelocks Consultant with an R Certification I’ve re-tightened my Sisterlocks for the better part of 13 years, partly because Dr. Cornwell cut the apron strings and set me free early on. Some of the things that have helped me to maintain my Sisterlocks over the years are following the instructions that were given to me during the class. Learning to re-tighten your locks isn’t for everyone, it takes time and commitment to following the instructions given. It’s always good to visit your Sisterlocks Consultant at least once a year to ensure that you’re staying on track. I hope the above steps will assist you in making that decision. If this was helpful please let me know in the comments section. Thanks you!

Who’s Ready For the Weekend???

Weekends for me have changed immensely over the years since I started my Locs of Luv business, in times past Saturdays and Sundays were the weekend for me. Two days to relax, worship and hang out with family and friends. In the business that I’m in weekends are for some of my clients the only days they have off, so Saturdays and on occasion some Sundays after worship you’ll find me at the salon handling my business. As a Certified Sisterlocks Consultant I’ve figured out how to make it work. My weekends are now throughout the week, on those days off I make sure to spend time with family and friends and get a little R & R in. I’ve been blessed with a wonderful clientele and enjoy every minute of my time with them, many of them have been in my life for years. The hours that we spend together are filled with positive and encouraging conversations.  We pray for each other, share each others burdens and boy oh boy do we get our laughs in, and on some rare occasions we’re simple quiet together.  My weekends are different from most but enjoyable nevertheless. Enjoy your weekend and if you’re in my area swing by and say hello to me at Locs of Luv. Lord bless I’ll be there locking and styling away.
